WHAT IS WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL? Windows 2000 Professional is one out of four editions of Windows 2000 (also known as Windows NT 5.0, Janus & Workstation) that have ever been released: Professional, Server, Advanced Server, and Datacenter Server. While each edition of Windows 2000 is targeted at a different market, they share a core set of features, including many system utilities such as the Microsoft Management Console and standard system administration applications. Announced on 1998-10-27, released to manufacturing on 1999-12-15 and launched at retail on 2000-02-17, it was designed primarily as a secure and stable desktop operating system for businesses, power users, and workstations. It succeeded Windows NT 4.0 Workstation and eventually paved the way for Windows XP. It is worth noting that there were plans for a home edition, codename Neptune, but it only saw a few test builds before being dissolved into Windows XP. Microsoft marketed Windows 2000 as the most secure Windows version ever at the time. However, it became the target of a number of high-profile virus attacks such as Code Red and Nimda. Windows 2000 was succeeded by Windows XP in October 2001, while Windows 2000 Server was succeeded by Windows Server 2003 in April 2003. For ten years since its release, it continued to receive patches for security vulnerabilities nearly every month until reaching end of support on 2010-07-13. |

Windows 2000 Embedded and Windows 2000 Professional Embedded (also Windows 2000 Professional For Embedded Systems) are versions of Windows 2000 Professional that were designed for embedded use, targeting ATMs, vending machines and other large embedded devices. Windows 2000 Embedded was cancelled during development in favor of Windows XP Embedded, however the binary identical FES versions were instead released in its place, which functions exactly the same as their retail counterparts, but licensed for embedded use.
While users of Windows 2000 Professional (as well as Windows 2000 Server) were eligible to purchase the upgrade license for Windows Vista Business or Windows Server 2008, neither of these operating systems could directly perform an upgrade installation from Windows 2000; a clean installation must have been performed instead or a two-steup upgrade through XP/2003. Microsoft has dropped the upgrade path from Windows 2000 (and earlier) to Windows 7. Windows 2000 introduced NTFS 3.0, Encrypting File System, and basic and dynamic disk management. Accessibility support has been improved compared to Windows NT 4.0 thanks to several new assistive technologies, and Microsoft has expanded support for various languages and locale information. Windows 2000 is the last version of Microsoft Windows to display the "Windows NT" designation, and the last version in which the desktop and server editions of Windows share the same name. As of September 2011, the official Windows Update v4 website has been closed, resulting in an endless refresh loop. This has, to date, affected all versions of the Windows 9x and Windows 2000 families up to Service Pack 3. Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 is incompatible with Windows Update v6 without the latest Windows Update Agent. |
